There are many target manufacturers available today and most reputable and well known target manufacturers use the highest grade of steel, known as AR500, that they can. This is a common grade of steel available from just about any steel vendor you could call in your local business phone book and purchase. It was not, nor has it ever been, designed for the steel target shooting market. It was originally designed for high wear, high abrasion purposes such as bulldozer and snow plow blades and in the mining industry equipment. It is not a highly expensive steel but it is a through hardened steel and was discovered to make a very adequate steel target material and as such, is the most widely used and common steel that premium targets manufacturers use. It registers usually between .477-.500 BHN or what is know as the Brinell Scale, or 51-52Rc on what Is known as the Rockwell Scale which is the most common scale used by the machining and metallurgical industries.

So in the end, with so many target producers using the exact same material, but naming it different names like Magnum or Extreme or Armor-Plate, how can there be such pricing differences if they are all fishing from the same pond? In the end it is fairly simple, it is how they are cutting it, bolting or welding it together, painting it, and most of all…how they market it.

All these things, coupled with cutting edge technology and proprietary heat treating methods, allow us to offer steel targets that when properly used, can be shot with calibers up to 50 Cal. armor piercing in automatic fire, clear up to 30MM TP/T rounds for the US Military market.

As a government contractor, who has both designed and manufactured targets and custom range devices for years for the US Military, Patriot is excited to bring this technology to the law enforcement, range-shooting, and individual markets as well.
